Online learning platform Coursera has released its first Global Skills Index. The authors offer an in-depth look at the world’s top trending skills in Business, Technology, and Data Science benchmarked across 60 countries and 10 industries.
The report focused on these subject areas because they are the three most popular domains on Coursera in terms of enrollments and also contain skills which will increasingly become crucial to the future of work. For each domain, the researchers examined a set of six competencies and the skills required to achieve expertise in these areas.
The countries were ranked against each other, with the entity that was at 100% placed at the top and the percentile rankings for each entity shown within its group. The countries were also broken into four categories based on their performance:
- Cutting-edge, #1-15
- Competitive, #16-30
- Emerging, #31-45
- Lagging, #46-60
Within the Business domain, which spans such skills as Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Sales, Management and Communication, Belarus was ranked #38 (37%), placing it in the Emerging group of countries. The neighbouring countries Poland, Russia and Ukraine also featured in the report, in which they ranked #27, #28 and #49, accordingly. Finland, Switzerland and Austria made up the Top 3.
In Data Science (Math, Statistics, Machine Learning, Data Management, Statistical Programming and Data Visualization) Belarus took position #26 — right behind Russia, which occupied #25. Poland was at position #10, and Ukraine, at #33. Israel, Switzerland and Belgium lead the pack in this subject area.
Belarus showed its best results in the Technology category, which covers Computer Networking, Operating Systems, Human Computer Interaction, Databases, Security Engineering and Software Engineering. Here, it grabbed place #6 (92%), superseded only by Argentina, Czech Republic, Austria, Spain and Poland. Russia ranked #18, and Ukraine, #31.
According to Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO at Coursera: «In order to keep pace with this change, governments and businesses must upskill their workforces to build, manage, and leverage new technologies. To guide workforce development decisions, they must first understand how the skills of their populations stack up in Business, Technology, and Data Science — the fundamental skill domains of the future. With Coursera’s Global Skills Index, they now have the insights to do just that».
